Jennette Whitehurst Obituary

Jennette F. Whitehurst NORFOLK - Jennette F. "Janie" Whitehurst, 83, died at Harbor's Edge in Norfolk March 6, 2009. She was born in Boston, and was the daughter of the late William H. and Esther S. Franks. She is survived by her husband, G. William Whitehurst; a daughter, Frances (Mrs. Peter Clark); a son, Cal; two grandsons; and a great-grandson. Mrs. Whitehurst was raised in Plymouth, Mass., and attended the public schools there. In 1946, she received a B.A. in math from Wheaton College and that same year married her husband, a union that lasted for more than 62 years. Over her lifetime, she taught math at Old Dominion University and Norfolk Academy, in both the lower and upper schools. She also served as her husband's legislative assistant during his last years in the U.S. House of Representatives. Janie Whitehurst lived a life of service to others. She was a chairperson of the church council at Ghent United Methodist Church, a past president of the board of Lee's Friends and later an honorary board member, president of the board of Early Works Inc., founder and first president of the Friends of the Norfolk Juvenile Court Inc., founding president of the zoo, the Virginia Zoological Society, member of the Board of Trustees of Cape Henry Collegiate School, one of the founders of Harbor's Edge and a member of the Board of the Fort Norfolk Retirement Community. She was also a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Plymouth Antiquarian Society. While her husband was in Congress she wrote a book, "The Other Side of the House, a Cookbook and Survival Manual" in which she related her life as the wife of a congressman and shared her favorite recipes. The family wishes to express its thanks for Dr. Julie Damman's loving care and that of the nurses and physicians at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and the nurses at Harbor's Edge. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Ghent United Methodist Church and a reception will follow at Harbor's Edge, One Colley Ave., Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ghent United Methodist Church Organ Fund, 531 Raleigh Ave., Norfolk, VA 23507 or to the G. William and Jennette F. Whitehurst History Scholarship at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA 23529. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Dr. Whitehurst, what a great and wonderful full life Janie lived. Her life is trully an inspiration to so many young people. She lived her life by example and in doing so inspired all of us to get more involved in life. Such an easy person to talk to and she always knew everyone's name. When both of you would come into Baker's Crust we as waitstaff would fight over who got to wait on both of you. We all love you and have such a great respect for you and your wife and she will be so incredibly missed. From all of us at Baker's Crust we feel honored to have known her. Janie was The Best!

Dear Bill,

I just wanted to add my thoughts and prayers for you at the passing of Janie. She was a lovely person and true southern lady.

Even though the miles have separated us, I enjoyed our many email exchanges over the years. I will always remember your gracious hospitality every time I managed to visit back east.

I am sorry that I can't be with you in person at this time.

Dear Dr. Whitehurst,

As I learn of your beloved wife's passing, my mind is transported years back to the Norfolk Academy. Of the short list of teachers in my preparatory years who left a lasting influence on me, Mrs. Whitehurst is the first on the list.

I also recall her assistance to a young minister scheduling a tour of the Capitol for denominational dignitaries and will remember fondly our last visit in your office.

I regret that due to my wife's recent surgery and her care needs I will be unable to come to Norfolk next Sunday. Please do know that you, Frances, and Cal are in my thoughts and prayers.

Faithfully yours,

The Right Reverend Dr. David I. Moshier

Dr. Bill,
You always expressed to all of us how much Lady Jane meant to you. I offer my deepest sympathy to you and your family. I am thankful that I was able to know and spend time with both of you, as well as share in all of the stories where she played the central part. Both of you are an example of how we ought to live and honor one another.

Dearest Dr. Bill:

I am sorry to learn of your wife's death. From the anecdotes you told us in class at ODU, she was a fine lady and a great inspiration to you, just as you are to your students. May God grant you and your family the peace and strength needed to endure this loss.

Faithfully Yours
