Raymond Roenker Obituary

Raymond Roenker Sr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Raymond Anthony "Popeye" Roenker Sr., 77, went on to be with the Lord March 5, 2009. Born June 14, 1931, in Covington, Ky., he is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Patricia L. Roenker. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Raymond Jr. and wife Michele, Joseph and wife Jill, daughter Patty, Timmy and wife Donna, James and wife Becky, Paul and wife Susan, Steven and wife Lynn and daughter-in-law, Karen Roenker. He is also survived by 28 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his 100-year old mother, Marian Roenker of Fort Thomas, Ky.; his sister, Patsy Vinson; and his sisters-in-law, Mary Rumsey, Donna Roenker and Carmen Roenker. After 30 years in the Navy, he retired as a chief petty officer. His favorite times were spent with his children and grandchildren and especially the weekly Roenker Roundtable meetings. He loved baseball, working on cars, music, fishing, shopping, gardening, picnics and being named the No. 1 "steak griller." He will be best remembered for his love of the Lord and the love of his family. His love and inspiration will live on in all of us. Popeye, we will always love you and we miss you. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with burial following in Rosewood Memorial Park. You may offer condolences to the family at www.mem.com.

My prayers and thoughts are with the family at this sad time. I will always remember Mr. Roenker's wonderful smile when I would talk to him about the Navy which he served with my dad. He shared stories with me about my dad after he had died. He helped me cope. I am sure they are sitting there in haven talking about the Navy. Funny thing they are probably buried together in the same Veterans cemetery. May peace be with his family.

Sorry for your loss. Never met Mr. Roenker but based on what I know of his sons Jamie and Paul he must have been a great man. Our deepest sympathy.

My love and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time. Mr. Roenker was a special part of my life when my parents split up. At a time when I needed a father he was there to fill that empty space in my life and my heart. Patty and I were inseperable then and some of my best memories were made with the Roenker family, in their home. I will always remember his laugh, his gentle nature and his smiling face. May God bless you.
