Matthew Johnson Obituary

Matthew R. Johnson VIRGINIA BEACH - Matthew R. Johnson of the 400 block of N. Witchduck Road died June 11, 2009. Born in Princess Anne County, now Virginia Beach, he was the owner and operator of Matthew's Barbershop and Whitaker's Grill for more than 40 years. He was a member of New St. John AME Church in Virginia Beach, where he was a member of the male chorus, Cathedral Choir, Mass Choir, and a trustee. He was also a member of Unity Lodge No. 93-PH Masons. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle W. Johnson; one dedicated daughter, Monica J. Simons (Terrance); four grandchildren, Khiry and Khalil Gadsden, Daonna Jones, and Terrance Simons Jr.; one aunt, Lola Elliott (Joseph); a favorite cousin, Lorraine Bullock; a dedicated friend, Curlee Overton; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Preston Johnson and Priscilla W. Johnson and his grandparents, Dallas and Annie Whitaker and Thomas and Jennie Willie. A funeral will be held Tuesday, June 16, at noon in New St. John AME Church with the Rev. E.H. Terrell Jr. officiating, Elder Gene Jarvis, eulogist. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Community Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is handling the arrangements.
