Thomas Shell Obituary

Thomas B. Shell Sr. NORFOLK - Thomas B. Shell Sr., 84, passed away in his home Sunday, June 21, 2009. He was a native of Norfolk, and was the son of the late Wesley Carl and Vera Shell. He was predeceased by his late wife, Clara Shell. Thomas served in the U.S. Navy as a boatswain and a coxswain during World War II in both Europe and Pacific theaters. Wounded in the Normandy invasion, later he was heading for the impending Japanese invasion when the war ended. Soon thereafter, Thomas entered the federal fire service at the Little Creek Amphibious Base, Norfolk, and had obtained the position of fire chief prior to retiring. After retirement, he became active in the Sandbridge Beach lifesaving and beach equipment rental service. He was a 32nd degree Mason of the Lynnhaven Lodge No. 220, Scottish Rite member and Khedive Temple Shriner. He was a member and past elder of the Oakdale Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Shell; son and best friend, Thomas Shell Jr. and wife Linda of Virginia Beach; many nieces and nephews; and his loyal pets, Scotty, Shelly, Lady and Tommy. Family and friends will cherish the memories of his constant good nature, famous storytelling, dynamic smile, as well as his unselfish devotion and care for others. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8 p.m. in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 8464 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in First Church of God Anderson, 8600 Granby St., Norfolk. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk.
