Robert Esleeck Obituary

Robert G. Esleeck PORTSMOUTH - Robert Glover Esleeck, 92, went home to the Lord June 24, 2009. Mr. Esleeck, a native of Portsmouth, was the son of the late Kate Calvert Esleeck and Richard Burroughs Esleeck and was predeceased by his brothers, Dick and Cal, and his sister, Annie Burroughs. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Ellen; two sisters, Kathryn Lasting and Phyllis Host; six nieces and nephews for whom he was a favorite uncle; and 14 grand-nieces and -nephews. Bob was an extraordinary man of courage, dignity and inspiration with a great sense of humor who endeared himself to everyone. During his life he was sighted and became blind, and once again was sighted and again became blind. Bob served the City of Portsmouth for many years as Commissioner of Revenue, was a Mason and member of Khedive Temple, and a member of River Shore Baptist Church. In his final year, Bob's life was enriched and blessed by the caring staff and warm residents at Dominion Village in Chesapeake. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 27, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 3920 Airline Blvd., Chesapeake, VA 23321. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to River Shore Baptist Church, 4501 River Shore Road, Portsmouth, VA 23703 or the Portsmouth Humane Society, 2704 Frederick Blvd., Portsmouth, VA 23704.
