Dorothy Denton Obituary

Dorothy S. Denton VIRGINIA BEACH - Dorothy S. Denton passed away June 27, 2009, after a short illness. Born in Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late Annie E. Harris and August P. Diehl. Mrs. Denton married Robert Denton (deceased) Nov. 28, 1946. She attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg from 1935 to 1937. She worked as a civil servant for 34 years as a Civilian Manpower Resources Manager and retired from the Naval Air Rework Facility in Norfolk in June of 1974. Mrs. Denton was a past president of the Norfolk Naval Air Station Toastmasters Club. She was a longtime member of the Little Creek Women's Club since 1976 in which she was active on the scholarship committee. During their retirement years, the Dentons traveled extensively, taking more than 50 cruises and international trips many of them with the Pearl Harbor Survivors. After Mr. Denton's death in 2005, Mrs. Denton continued to travel, taking four cruises with her lifelong friend, Helen Blassingham of Norfolk, and a friend of 39 years, retired U.S. Navy Capt. Mary Anderson Shupack of McLean, Va. On her most recent cruise, June 4 through 15, 2009, Mrs. Denton was accomplanied by Kylan McLelland, her friend and caregiver for the last 3½ years. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, Southeastern Food Bank or to a charity of one's choice. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Southside Chapel, is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.altmeyer.com.
