Daniel Goldman Obituary

Daniel Goldman NORFOLK - Daniel Goldman of Norfolk passed away July 6, 2009, at the age of 86. A key figure in the Hampton Roads advertising and public relations industry for half a century, he was highly regarded for his creativity, dedication to family, and commitment to community. Dan was born Sept. 27, 1922, in Binghamton, N.Y. During World War II, he took leave from his studies at The College of William & Mary to enlist in the Army Air Corps. Dan served in the European Theater, receiving four medals during his three years of service. Following the war, he returned to William & Mary and earned a B.A. A talented artist and cartoonist, Dan, along with friend and partner Ira Davidoff, founded Cavalier Advertising Agency in Norfolk in 1948. It was one of the region's first two ad agencies. In 1967, Dan launched Norfolk's Dan Advertising, which served regional and national clients and won many prestigious professional awards. Dan was named Advertising Man of the Year by the Advertising Federation of Tidewater in 1973. He continued to serve as the agency's chairman emeritus after son Dean took the helm of Dan Advertising in 1987 and renamed the firm Goldman & Associates. Dan's extensive work on behalf of the community included serving as president of Temple Israel, president of the Advertising Federation of Tidewater, chairman of the Norfolk Community Services Board, and as a member of the boards of ARC, the Tidewater Better Business Bureau, and Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia. In his free time, Dan enjoyed traveling with wife Marilyn, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and drawing. After retiring, he wrote a humorous memoir about his early years in advertising as well as a moving account of coping with daily health challenges later in life. Dan is the third child of the late Harry and Rebecca Krieger Goldman. He was preceded in death by his sister, Selma Swerdlik and his brother, Bernard Goldman. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Wall Goldman; sons, Dean, Jeff, and Lon; daughters-in-law, Ilene and Suzy; granddaughters, Rachel, Alisa, Haley, Madeleine and Brett; and grandson, Ari. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, in Temple Israel, 7255 Granby St., Norfolk, with a graveside service at Forest Lawn Cemetery immediately following. Officiating will be Rabbi Rosalyn Mandelberg and Cantor Elihu Flax. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to a charity of your choice.
