Gladys Cotten Obituary

Gladys T. Cotten NORFOLK - Gladys Treakle Cotten, 90, died Saturday, July 11, 2009. She was the widow of the late William H. Cotten Jr. Gladys was a lifelong resident of Norfolk and was the daughter of the late Capt. Thomas W. Treakle and Frances D. Treakle. She was a 60-year member of Epworth United Methodist Church. She was a 1935 graduate of Maury High School and attended the Norfolk division of The College of William and Mary for two years. In 1938, she received a degree in music from Greensboro College, Greensboro, N.C. Over the years, she served as organist at Lafayette Presbyterian Church, the David Adams Chapel, and The First Church of Christ Scientist. She is survived by two sons, William H. Cotten III and his wife Betty and Thomas Mitchell Cotten and his wife Sandra; a daughter, Joanne Cotten Bailey; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, in the Mausoleum of Woodlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Phyllis Earley. Memorial contributions may be made to the Epworth United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor's choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
