John S. Sweeney

John S. Sweeney BOYKINS - John S. Sweeney, 70, died July 16, 2009, at Nansemond Pointe Convalescent Center, Suffolk. He was a graduate of George Washington University and was a retired manager of Aster Nut Company in Boykins. John was a longtime volunteer for the Salvation Army, a member of Boykins Baptist Church, and a former member of the Boykins Lions Club. John was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn Johnson Sweeney. Survivors include two stepsons, Barry Thorpe of Carrsville and George L. Thorpe Jr. and wife Jill of Franklin; and six stepgrandchildren, Jessica, Sydney, Sarah, Ryan, Haleigh, and George Lee Thorpe III. A graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Beechwood Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Baugham officiating.
