Mike was one of my BEST friends for the last twenty-five plus years. As a mentor we journeyed through the leadership of Bennett’s Creek and Chesapeake EMS. We took on the challenge of becoming Paramedics together. As a Supervisor he was a counselor and coach. But more importantly, as a friend he was the brother I never had.
Like so many others have stated, Mike was always willing to help, whether family, friend, or just someone in the community who was in need, he was always lending a helping hand.
Kids came first. I saw this as I have watched Mike Jr., and Meg grow. However, Makayla and Trey also helped keep Mike on his toes!!
Gail and Mike Jr., I hope you can find some comfort knowing that Mike was loved and respected by many throughout the community. Also know that there are many of us who are always willing to lend you a helping hand.
Mike will be missed but never forgotten!! There are to many stories for that!

We have lost a great friend in the passing of Mike; but I know that the family knows how much everyone cared and liked him. He did so much for our community, friends and family. He was always there when you needed him. I have fond memories of Mike and a gift I'll always have...Meg. Prayers to the family and know I'm only a call away.

Dear Gail,
I trust that I have helped you, and those who Mike loved and cherished, to preserve his last moments on this Earth in pictures and videos. My photographs document just how much Mike was loved and honored by those who gathered to show their respect for him. May our fears of suffering be diminished by knowing that there are many with trials greater than our own. Life is short; let us fill it with love.

Mike will never be forgotten. He was a true professional. Mike and my father attended the Chesapeake Virginia Fire Department Rookie School together in 1981. Mike would later become a supervisor in the Emergency Medical Services Division. In 1996, when my father was killed on the Job, EMS Captain Mike New was the one who transported my father and John Hudgins from the scene. Mike, during his life and career cared a great deal for others and lived his life accordingly.

Mike was one of the first people I met when I moved to Virginia in 1982. I had the pleasure of knowing him and working with him, especially during my years at CFD. After I moved away in 1990, Mike and I still kept in touch; whenever I was in Tidewater, he and I would get together. And when my parents moved from Portsmouth to Florida, he got a few friends together and helped them pack.
He was a wonderful friend and father, and I will truly miss him.

I first met Mike back in the early 60's when my family moved to Churchland. During the early years we didn't hang out together but knew each other through association with others in the neighborhood, school and baseball. As the years passed our lives further distanced by the fact that Mike seemed to follow what I now understand as priciples of right living and helping others and I followed a path in the opposite direction. One way Mike chose to help others was through his involvement in the EMS system. As an EMT, Mike was instrumental in saving my life on more than one occasion. However, it wasn't until many years later that I came to the realization that God had placed Mike in my life along certain low points and times of great need, and for that I am eternally grateful. I read his obituary today and I am awed by the constant giving of himself and his accomplishments that have undoubtedly helped countless others. The life that Mike led here on earth is proof that there are Angels living among us. Thanks so much Mike.
Gail, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May God bless and comfort all of you at this time and always.

I worked with Mike at the Chesapeake Fire Department for several years. He was a very kind-hearted person. He helped me quite a bit when my Mother was ill and had to be moved to Woodrow Wilson Rehab. Center and I will never forget his kindness and compassion.
