Words...fail. I cannot imagine the world without Carole in it.

Dr. Hubbard, was my Mentor. My inspiration, my Hero...she was my Art Teacher at Booker T. Washington High School 1986 through 1989. She purposefully stayed there, to continue to teach me and other students that had formed a close friendship with her, before moving on to head up the Art Dept at Newport News schools. She even got a darkroom built for the Photography class she started. We were with her when she got her Doctorate from PENN...I remember the day she told me...we jumped around like kids, laughed and hugged. We all 'respectfully' addressed her as "Doc" from then on. She would always roll her eyes at us. She was like that though...humble, kind, always thinking of others. She taught us not only about Art, but about life. Dr. Hubbard and I communicated on a level that most people never reach. She believed in me, my talent. Fed it, encouraged it...God I'm going to miss her!!!

Strange because it's been 20 years sense I've seen her. I went searching for her, and got in touch again a few years back, and we emailed several times about going to lunch, and catching up, but we never got around to it.

Oh, how I regret that...regret not knowing she passed away. I just found out from one of the other students/classmates. I wish so much that I could have been there! Been there to pay my respects, to say goodbye...but I also know, she would just smile that knowing, sweet smile and I would just know, as I do now that she already knows.

Carole, her teachings on not just Art, but life, love, and friendship, expression of self, her generous heart, have always stuck with me, and influenced my work, and always will.

My deep love and condolences to LeRoy, and the family. Carole's spirit, and life goes on in us all!

Dear Leroy and family,
I am so sorry for your great loss. I remember being interviewed by Carole in 94' when I had just moved here and so much needed a job. If it were not for her confidence in me, I might not have stayed in Virginia. I was always struck by Carole's being very classic yet equally down to earth all at the same time. I hope you will be comforted by your memories and I believe she is in a gentle and very loving place.

Dear Leroy,

Like so many who have written, I was shocked and saddened to hear that Carole had died. I am so used to seeing you both at VAEA conferences that it will be such a void in future years. I think back to when we all met while taking graduate classes back in the 70's, and having you and Carole over to my apartment in Williamsburg for dinner. And then years later while visiting my native Newport News, running into you both while you were out biking. Carole was such a vital person and will be sorely missed. God bless you and give you peace, Leroy.

My deepest sympathies to Leroy and Carole's family. Carole was a wonderful friend and dedicated advocate for the arts. I met Carole when she assumed the Art Supervisor's position for Newport News City Schools. I always found her leadership style to be collaborative and caring. As an art teacher, my students and I benefited from her dedicated and very personal attention to the needs of the art classroom. Beyond that, Carole was a reliable friend who was also great fun and, at the same time, an inspiration...advocating for personal and professional growth. Her kindness, intelligence, strength and courage will be sorely missed.

Doug & Nicole,
I know that you will miss your Mom greatly, but it is SO exciting that she is in the presence of the LORD where there is fullness of joy. What an awesome thought that she's with Adam & Eve, David, Solomon, Isaiah, Jeremiah, the Apostle Paul, Peter, James and John, all the rest of the wonderful saints (including my Dad) and most of all JESUS.

I have been praying for you and our family prayed for you all this afternoon that His Spirit will comfort you in this time of loss.

This was a real shock and a great loss to all who knew Carole (Dr. Hubbard) in the NNPS and her art community. It is hard to say how many lives she touched through her long career as an art educator, supervisor and lover of the arts. Carole was truly a beautiful person inside and out and no one can really measure all of the accomplishments she succeeded on this earth.

My heartfelt sympathy and prayers goes to her family which shared her with all of us. We are so sadden by this news but we cannot grasp how they must be feeling. Take comfort in knowing she is in a great place with fields of color and endless beauty forever.

Carole, thanks for touching our lives!

Sincerely,

Suzanne Ghaffari

Carole was the first to hire me into the position of art teacher in the Newport News Public Schools and I am still enjoying it! She lives on in all those who met her and were touched by her gentleness.
May God hold her, and each one of us, in the palm of His hand.

Dear Leroy,

We were shocked to hear of Carole's death. We had enjoyed working with her as a colleague, then later working for her as our art supervisor. Her strength, beauty and vitality were an inspiration to all in the art profession. Her advocacy for the arts was loud and true. NNPS students continue to enjoy the legacy of her efforts. The fact that in her retirement she continued to share her talents and vast experience with future teachers at ODU is a testament to her lifelong commitment to the arts. We will miss seeing her at art conferences.

We were very fortunate to have Carole and Leroy as our neighbors on 66th Street when we first move to Newport News. Touches of Carole's eye for beauty still remain in many of the flowers she planted in her garden. We will always remember Carole and Leroy, sitting on their bench, enjoying the evening together.
