Wayne Schoppaul Obituary

Wayne D. Schoppaul Sr. PORTSMOUTH - Wayne D. Schoppaul Sr., 82, passed away Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009 at home, in Portsmouth. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth of Portsmouth; his two sons, Wayne Jr. of Virginia Beach and Mark Schoppaul of York Springs, Pa.; and his daughter, Deanna Shoemaker of St. Augustine, Fla. Also surviving him are six grandchildren and one great- granddaughter. Wayne was born in Kirkland, Texas, and met his wife while serving the U.S. Navy in World War II. He worked for the Bell Telephone System his entire working life. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserve and retired with the rank of master sergeant. Over the years he and his wife lived in Texas, Connecticut, Virginia and Florida and returned to Virginia in 2006. His interests included surf fishing and Ham radio. He shared his love of fishing with his sons while they were growing up. He shared his love of Ham radio with his daughter, who earned her license at a young age. He received postcards from people he contacted all over the world. He shared his talents by teaching Ham radio operations to blind students at the St. Augustine School for the Blind. He loved playing golf for relaxation and enjoyed teaching his grandsons the game. A celebration of his life will be conducted by Bishop Karl Williams at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. A reception will be held following the service.
