Lena Pitkin Obituary

Lena White Pitkin VIRGINIA BEACH - Lena White Pitkin passed away Aug. 3, 2009, at Windermere Nursing Center. Lena was born April 19, 1918, in Mathews County, Virginia, to Dorsey Evans White Sr. and Edith Morgan White. The White family moved to Norfolk in 1920. Lena graduated from Maury High School in 1936. She was employed with W. T. Grant Co., the C & P Telephone Co. and Miller and Rhoads. Lena was a member of Lafayette Presbyterian Church and later joined Bayside Presbyterian Church. She was a former member of the Chesopeian Garden Club and Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club. She was also a member of several bridge clubs and enjoyed many wonderful experiences with her friends, the "Golden Girls." Lena was a member of the passing "Greatest Generation." Those left behind to honor Lena and learn from her example of kindness and integrity are her children, Don Askew and wife Lou, Tom Pitkin and wife Trudie, Joan P. Saunders and husband Martin; grandchildren, Donna A. Cloniger, Diane A. Graves and husband Mark, Joanne A. Vought and husband Hall, Branden L. Johnson and husband Matthew, Lacey Locke, Genene Saunders and Kelly Saunders; great-grandchildren, Rachel Cloniger, Katelyn Graves and Christian Vought. Lena is also survived by her sister, Countess W. Glemming; her brother, Louis White; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Lena was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Dorsey Evans White Jr. and Norris White; and granddaughter, Angie Locke. During the last years of her life, Lena accepted the challenges of her failing health and increasing loss of productivity with patience, tenacity, grace and humor. Lena's family wishes to thank the staff at Windermere Nursing Center and hospice for her care during her final time with us. The family will receive friends Thursday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. A celebration of Lena's life will take place in the funeral home Friday at 11 a.m. with interment to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. Online condolences may be made at www.hdoliver.com.
