Peggy Maffei Obituary

Peggy Maffei CHESAPEAKE - Peggy "Margaret" Maffei, 98, passed away quietly at her home in the 2100 block of Chesterfield Loop, Aug. 4, 2009. Peggy, affectionately known as "NaNaPeg" was born Oct. 16, 1910, in Hurlinger, Germany, the daughter of the late Karl and Freda Herrman. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 5. The family settled in Atchison, Kan., and Peggy attended school in Atchison. She moved to New Jersey during her teenage years. Peggy lived for many years in Little Silver, N.J., before moving to Florida and eventually settling in Marco Island, Fla., where she lived for nearly 26 years. She and her daughter moved to Chesapeake in 2005. Her constant companions were her beloved dogs, Buffy, Bridget and Gigi. One of her greatest joys was tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. Peggy is survived by her daughter, Joan E. Tabb of Chesapeake; and her son Peter C. Maffei and wife Cindy of Willow Lake, S.D.; five grandchildren, LeeAnn Whippen of Chesapeake, Diane Berglund of Brentwood, Calif., Peter Maffei Jr. and wife Belinda of Columbia, S.C., Michael Maffei of Middletown, N.J., and Thomas Maffei and wife Kate of Alexandria, Va.; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Karl and Freda Herrman; brothers and sisters, John Herrman, Sister Mary Callista, Walter Herrman, Charlie Herrman, Mary Miller and Tom Curtis. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Chesapeake Regional Home Care Services; her doctor, Dr. David Palmisano; her nurse, Francine Timm; the Rev. Marie Pogorelec; and her caregiver, Lakeshia Moody. A graveside memorial service will be held at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Marie Pogorelec officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Chesapeake Regional Home Care Services/Hospice, 667 Kingsborough Square No. 201, Chesapeake, VA 23320 or American Cancer Society, 4416 Expressway Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23452.

Nana was the ultimate Grandmother. I last saw her in June 2008 and we cried and hugged for several minutes in happiness. Our deepest heartfelt sympathy to everyone during this difficult time.
