Mary McNew Obituary

Mary Alice M. McNew CHESAPEAKE - Mary Alice McCready McNew, 83, died Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at her home in Chesapeake. The only child of Mavis Hatfield and Sanders Oury McCready, Mary A. was born in Bluefield, W.Va., April 9, 1926. Afflicted with childhood polio, Mary A. refused to let it hinder her, and took dance classes to strengthen her legs. Mary A.'s family relocated during the Depression to Glade Spring, in Washington County, Virginia, and Glade Spring became the place she always afterward considered home. There, she met the man who would become her husband, Charles Grant McNew Jr. of Bristol, Tenn. Charles served as a staff sergeant in England and France during World War II, and sent Mary A. a steady stream of love letters and gifts from Europe. Upon his return from the war, Charles married Mary A. and moved to Portsmouth, where they remained happily together until Charles's death in 1994. Mary A. is survived by a son, Charles Sanders McNew; his wife, Melanie King McNew; a granddaughter, Maeve Lawson McNew; a soon-to-be-born grandson, Charles Grant McNew III; and dearest friend and companion, Sallie Elliott. Mary A. was a strong woman who lived life and left life on her own terms. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Aug. 18, beginning at noon at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.snellingsfuneralhome.com.

Blessed are they that mourn:for they shall be comforted. Sandy,I was so very sorry to hear of the passing of your Mother and my dear friend Mrs. Mary A. as I called her. I'm going to miss my dear friend of whom I looked forward to seeing on her shopping day. Please stop by to see me when in town. My deepest sympathy. Iris (Food Lion)

I will truly miss Mrs. McNew. I loved visiting and sharing coffee and blueberry muffins. She was the BEST story teller.
She loved Charlie and Sandy so very much. She made me feel like I had known she and her family for decades. Some of her best stories were
about her trips to New York for Thanksgiving. She always cracked me up…..
When I lost my mother this January, Mrs. McNew patted me on the shoulder and said “I’ll be your mother”. I will never forget her smile. Her kindness meant so very much to me. All my love and deepest sympathy. Love, Kathy Kretz

I was so sorry to hear about Mary A's death. I last saw her in March of 2001 at Dorothy Hewitt's birthday party. I remember her and Charlie so well back in the 50's and 60's when I lived in Cradock. They had a 1957 red and white ford that I really liked. They would visit Leon and Dot Rose alot. Charlie would always joke that he was going to let me drive it, but I was too young.... Garry Kimball
