Amelia Miles VIRGINIA BEACH - Amelia Miles died peacefully Aug. 9, 2009 at Bay Pointe Medical and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia Beach. A longtime resident of Green Acres in Portsmouth, Amelia would have celebrated her 100th birthday Sept. 4th of this year. Mrs. Miles was the daughter of George and Amelia Davis and grew up in Bristol, Tenn., with her brother George and sister Edith, also deceased. She earned undergraduate degrees at Virginia Intermont and King Colleges in Bristol, a master's degree from Old Dominion University in Norfolk and studied at the Slade Art School in London, England. A talented artist, Mrs. Miles was a member of Elizabeth River Artists and served on the Portsmouth Fine Arts Commission. She also was a docent at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk for many years. An avid golfer, she was a charter member of the Elizabeth Manor Country Club and active in the Women's Golf Association of the club in Portsmouth. Mrs. Miles taught in the Portsmouth Elementary Schools for many years, and after retirement, taught art on a volunteer basis for the school system. Mrs. Miles was predeceased by her son, Michael Miles and her daughter, Amelia Miles. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Wade Ward and grandsons, Burke Ward and Evan Ward of New York City and Matthew Ward of Virginia Beach and Matthew's wife Jamie Carroll Ward; two great-grandchildren, Madison Ward and Noah Ward. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, at 1 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, corner of London Blvd. and Washington Street in Portsmouth. The Rev. David Lassalle will conduct the service. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials be made to: Citizens Committee to Protect the Elderly, P.O.
