James Woodberry Obituary

James M. Woodberry NORFOLK - James Mitchell Woodberry, 52, a native of Norfolk, passed away Aug. 9, 2009, at his residence with his family by his side. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and Norfolk State University with a B.S. degree. He retired from Verizon. He was a gifted musician and singer with the Pentecostal Gospel Singers. He was a dedicated member of the Basilica of Saint Mary and sang in the Gospel Choir and the Male Chorus. He also worked in the eatery. He was predeceased by his mother, Ethel Verdeller. He is survived by his father, Heyward Woodberry; his sisters, Karen Woodberry and Gwendolyn Davis; his beloved niece, Keeyauna Nicole; his adopted sister and friend, Faye Jones; and his devoted life partner of 18 years, Howard Hemmerich; many aunts, uncles and cousins, dedicated church family and a host of wonderful friends. The celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, at 1:30 p.m. at the Basilica of Saint Mary, 232 Chapel St., Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to his church or the National Kidney Foundation. Hale Funeral Home is in charge. www.halefuneralhome.com.

Woodberrry was my co-worker at Verizon for a few years. We had lots of laughs kidding around at work. He had a warm heart. He fought a good fight with all his illnesses. Knowing the God fearing man he was, there is no question in my mind, he is resting in peace.
