William Campbell Obituary

William J. Campbell HERTFORD - Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. William Joseph Campbell passed away peacefully Aug. 19 2009, at his home in Hertford, N.C. Bill was born July 25, 1945, in Richmond Hill, N.Y., to Alice Heath Campbell and William B. Campbell, and grew up in Argentina, Venezuela, and on Long Island in New York. Bill graduated from Brown University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations. He enlisted in the United States Army in July 1968 and was commissioned as a military intelligence officer June 20, 1969. His exceptionally meritorious service included overseas tours of duty in Vietnam, Germany and South Korea. Early in his career, he served in intelligence staff officer positions at brigade through corps echelons. He distinguished himself by taking care of soldiers as commander, Company A 519th Military Intelligence Battalion, in Saigon, Vietnam, as an inspector general for the worldwide- oriented U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command, and as deputy commander, 501st Military Intelligence Brigade, Seoul, South Korea. Following his military retirement from the Defense Intelligence Agency in February 1994, he was employed continuously by the U.S. defense industry through 2008, usually in support of U.S. Forces Korea. Besides his family and friends, Bill enjoyed golf, small boat sailing and worldwide travel. Bill is survived by his wife, Kathleen McConaghy Campbell and his sister, Ann Rowan of Cutchogue, N.Y. Beloved survivors include three sons, three daughters, four grandsons, three granddaughters and one great-granddaughter. A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, Bill will be missed by many. A visitation and viewing will be held Tuesday, Aug. 25, in Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services, 509 Dobbs St., Hertford, NC 27944 from 1 until 3 p.m. A funeral will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 207 North Broad St., Edenton, NC 27932, on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 3:30 p.m. Burial, with military honors, will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., on a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Columbans, c/o Regional Director, Saint Columbans, C.P.O. Box 1167, Seoul 100-611, Korea or a charity of your choice.
