Lucy Hierstein Obituary

Lucy S. Hierstein GREENVILLE - Lucy Sandrock Hierstein, 84, passed away Aug. 27, 2009, in Greenville, N.C., following a brief illness. Inurnment will be alongside her husband in Arlington National Cemetery. She was born in Fort Madison, Iowa, to John Edwin Sandrock Sr. and his wife, Lola Thornton. She attended public schools in Fort Madison and then graduated from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Quincy, Ill., in 1945, as a registered nurse. Her husband's career with the Immigration and Naturalization Service necessitated frequent transfers, and Lucy worked as a registered nurse in a number of locations including Norfolk, as her family moved throughout the world. She was predeceased by her husband, Brooks R. Hierstein; her parents and her older brother, John Edwin Sandrock Jr. She is survived by two sons, Bruce R. Hierstein and his wife Esther in Norfolk, and Kent V. Hierstein and his wife Jeanne in Illinois; four grandchildren, Allyson, Bryce, Brooks and Stephanie; one great-grandchild, Emma; her sister, Alice Bengston; brother, Dr. Austin Sandrock; a number of nieces and nephews.
