Maureen Buck Obituary

Maureen Buck NORFOLK - Maureen Buck, 68, of Newport Avenue, died Sept. 17, 2009. Mrs. Buck was born in New York City, the daughter of the late Joseph Martilik and Claire Sullivan Martilik. She was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Mole. Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Thomas E. Buck; a daughter, Wendy Holland; a son, Michael Buck; three grandsons, Nathan Holland, Thomas Holland, and Joshua Holland. Mrs. Buck is also survived by a niece, Theresa Schunk. Maureen graduated from Sewanhaka High School in Stewart Manor, N.Y., in 1959. She married her husband at the Cadet Chapel at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1962 and began life as an Army wife. In Germany, she worked in the Red Cross Field Office aiding soldiers in emergency family situations. As a talented and aspiring artist, she trained at Wooster Community Art Center in Danbury, Conn., where she became quite accomplished in sculpture, painting of all mediums, and drawing. She authored and illustrated her book, "Teddy Bears," published in 1985. A new found love of Central American food and culture inspired her to pursue bachelor's degrees in Spanish and English with a minor in philosophy at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Conn. Maureen worked at Hechts, which later became Filenes, in Danbury and Norfolk for 15 years. She retired so she could spend more time with her grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 2009 at First Lutheran Church in Norfolk by the Rev. Nathan Gragg. Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, which assists men and women in the U.S. armed forces who have been injured during conflicts around the world:http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/. Tom: Having you and Maureen in the group when Marcia and I were dating is among our most cherished memories. We have enjoyed a few similar moments during reunions over the years. Maureen was just wonderfully joyous and beatiful, and like you, that's how we will always remember her. We share your sorrow. God be with you and yours. Fred and Marcia
