Jack Burgess Obituary

Jack Edward Burgess VIRGINIA BEACH - Jack Edward Burgess, 82, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, with his family at his bedside at Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. Jack was born Dec. 22, 1926, in Princeton, W.Va. He was the son of the late Susan Roles and Roy Davidson Burgess. Jack graduated form Princeton High School and served our country in the Navy from December 1944 to July 1946 prior to attending Bluefield College for two years. He went to work for the Virginian Railroad in 1947 and was transferred to Norfolk, in December 1955 where he worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad until 1988. He was a member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jo Kelly of Roanoke, Va. He is survived by his wife, Mary MacDonald Burgess; his five children, Ronald E. Burgess (Linda) of Woodbridge, Va., Alice Burgess of Virginia Beach, Robert L. Knight (Janey) of West Palm Beach, Fla., Cynthia K. Sisson (John Shine) of Portsmouth, and Stephen F. Burgess (Kimberly) of Virginia Beach; his brother, R. Davidson Burgess Jr. (Sue) of Nags Head, N.C.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held today, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. in Thalia Lynn Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. Alice, I am so sorry to hear about your father's death. I know he had quite a struggle during this past year, but now he is at peace. I wish you peace, also, during this difficult time. My deepest sympathies to you and the rest of the family.
