Robert Cooke Obituary

Robert V. Cooke Sr. CHESAPEAKE - Robert V. Cooke Sr., 78, formerly of Chesapeake, passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009. Born in Old Norfolk County, he was the son of the late Richard B. and Julia L. Vanderhoff. He was also predeceased by a son, Randy G. Cooke and a sister, Mary Ann West. Robert was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served several years in Japan. He was the owner/operator of Cooke Hardware, Chesapeake. A talented musician, he played trumpet for the American Legion and the Khedive Temple. He was very active in the old Great Bridge community and supported many community projects over the years. An athlete, he was an avid supporter of the Great Bridge Football program and could be found on many of the local golf courses with his closest friends. Survivors include his son, Robert V. "Robbie" Cooke Jr. and wife Sondra of Currituck County, North Carolina; two grandsons, Corey and Kyle Cooke of Virginia Beach; three brothers, Larry, Johnny and Richard Cooke; nephews, Dennis West and Rick West; nieces, Karen Mellot and Jorita Turner; as well as a large extended family and many close friends. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The Rev. Charles L. Moseley will officiate. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Viewing will begin Sunday with the family receiving friends from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
