Laura M. McCaleb CAPE CHARLES - Laura Marie McCaleb, 95, died in her Cape Charles home Oct. 21, 2009. She was preceded in death by her mother, Idealie M. McCaleb and her father, Walter F. McCaleb Sr. She is survived by her niece, Eda E. Grothouse and her husband Art of Belle Haven, Va.; a nephew, E. Philip McCaleb and his wife Marji of Craddockville, Va.; a niece, Alice Pitkin Cox of West Port, Conn.; a niece, Laura A. Common of Toronto, Canada; and a niece, Natalis R. Parris of Eagles Mere, Pa. Miss McCaleb is also survived by many great and great-great-nieces and -nephews. Miss McCaleb was born in San Antonio, Texas. She graduated from Barnard with a Bachelor of Arts degree and became a librarian. She received her masters from the University of Texas in San Antonio, Texas. Following the end of World War II, Miss McCaleb joined the Army's Special Services as a librarian. She was stationed in Alaska, Korea, Panama, Hawaii, Germany and France. She served with the Army in San Antonia in the historic records division. Following her service with the Army, she was a librarian at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. Miss McCaleb was fluent in French, German and Spanish. One of Miss McCaleb's favorite past times was working on old houses. She worked on four homes in Cape Charles, prior to her death. She was also an artist who loved to paint. Miss McCaleb was very proud of her artistic great-nieces and -nephews. She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church. The family would like to thank the many friends of "Miss Laura" who have watched over her, unobtrusively, for the last several years. They would also like to thank Hospice of the Eastern Shore for their care, support and understanding. There will be a Requiem Mass at St. Charles Catholic Church, 454 Randolph Ave., Cape Charles, Va., with Father Michael Breslin officiating today, Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. Burial will be private at the family plot in Belle Haven.
