Tom Smith Obituary

Thomas Smith Jr. KITTY HAWK - Former Nashvillian and lifelong communicant of Christ Church Cathedral Thomas Olsen Hartley Smith Jr. of Kitty Hawk, N.C., died Oct. 23, 2009 of Guillain-Barre Syndrome at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was born to the late Georgia Belle and Thomas O. H. Smith July 18, 1932. An alumnus of The University of the South at Sewanee where he pledged Phi Delta Theta fraternity, he graduated from Vanderbilt University and its School of Law. He served as a lieutenant in the judge advocate division at Great Lakes Naval Training Center before establishing his law practice in Nashville. In his retirement, he enjoyed working at the Home Depot. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Barbara Nixon Smith; his brother, David H. Smith (Gardner); and two sons, Thomas Olsen Hartley Smith III (Melissa) of Livingston, Tenn., and Andrew Mayer Smith; and their mother, Gloria Mayer Smith. Also surviving are his daughter-in-law, Marja Smith; two granddaughters, Kendall Vaughn Smith and Rianne Melinda Smith; and six stepchildren and their families. His daughter, Melinda Mayer Smith, died in 1992. The funeral will be held at noon Tuesday, Oct. 27, at All Saints Episcopal Church in Southern Shores, N.C.
