Charles Folz Obituary

Charles E. Folz NORFOLK - Charles E. Folz, 89, of the 6400 block of Azalea Garden Road, passed away peacefully Oct. 18, 2009, with his loving family at his side. He was born May 14, 1920 to the late Charles and Margarette Folz in Palatine, Ill. He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Charles E. Folz Jr. Charles is survived by his wife of 66 years, Charlotte. He leaves behind his son, Jeffery M. Folz of Norfolk and a daughter, Sherry Curtis and husband Bill Curtis of Alabama. He had three grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. He preformed 31 years of service as a pilot in the Navy and was a World War II veteran in the Pacific Theater. Charles received two air medals and a World War II Victory Medal. He was one of the few enlisted pilots to receive those honors. Charles flew many different aircraft in his career including PBY, PBM and P5M Seaplanes. Charles had over 13,000 hours of flying time in the Navy. He also flew C-54s for NASA after his Navy service. He became a commissioned officer in 1955. Charles retired with honors as a lieutenant commander. His joys in life were riding his motorcycle, hunting and fishing. Charles was the past president of Silver Eagle Association, past president of Issak Walton League, member of the VFW, Fleet Reserve, Tidewatchers, Glen Gariff Civic League and Sleepy Hollow Hunt Club. Charles will be deeply missed by his family and friends and a very special adopted great-granddaughter, Makayla who made him happy in his final years. Special thanks to Pat for your wonderful care and devotion to his family. In lieu of flowers, please give donations to the MS or Cancer Society in his memory. There will be a viewing at Hollomon-Brown at 8464 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, on Thursday, Oct. 29, and a chapel service Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on Jan. 6, 2010 at 3 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
