Marian Brewer Larsen NORFOLK - Marian Brewer Larsen passed away in the Skilled Nursing Facility at Harbor's Edge Monday, Oct. 26, 2009 after a 13-month battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of almost 63 years, retired U.S. Navy Capt. Norman E. Larsen; her son, David of Charlottesville; her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mansfield of Norfolk; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was born in Fremont, Neb., on Oct. 22, 1926 to the late Goldie (Larson) and John Brewer. She graduated from Fremont Senior High School in 1944 and was employed by the local radio station. She was married in First Lutheran Church in Fremont to Norman on Dec. 25, 1946. She spent nearly three decades as a Navy wife, followed with 15 major moves to Florida, California, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Newport, R.I. During that time she was active in Navy wives' organizations and later as a commanding officer's wife, contributed her time to maintaining morale among the wives during deployments of the Squadron or ships. She also contributed many hours to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. She became very skilled in various crafts and later became an expert quilter, winning numerous awards for her quilts and wall hangings, which take this craft to the level of art. She has won acclaim from everyone who has seen them and has made one for nearly every family member including grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She also became an avid golfer. Past memberships include Sewell's Point golf club, Lake Wright golf club, Tidewater Ladies Golf Association, and Cypress Point Country Club, and in Naples, Florida, Embassy Wood, and Naples Heritage Country Clubs. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Norfolk and resided at Harbor's Edge since Jan. 15, 2007. The family will would like to express their sincere gratitude to the nursing staff at Harbor's Edge for their conscientious care the past year. A funeral will be conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. in First Lutheran Church, 1301 Colley Ave., Norfolk, with Pastor James Blalock officiating. A reception will follow in the Grand Hall of Harbor's Edge, No. 1 Colley Ave. Entombment will be private with the family at Princess Anne Memorial Park Mausoleum.
