My condolences to Dan and his family on the loss of such a special lady. I have had the privilege of knowing Agnes for many years through the Ladies Auxiliary of the FRA and I am saddened of her loss. She was a special friend and will be missed by everyone that knew her and she was indeed a cornerstone of the LA FRA. My prayers are with her family and friends.

Dear Dan, Sandy, Brendan, and Devin,

Tonight I was saddened to get a copy of the e-mail about Mom/Grandmom Coleman's death. I'm so sorry I never got to meet her. Her e-mails, sent well into her 90s, and her submission to the Norfolk newspaper about her Pearl Harbor experience made her sound like a fascinating, sharp, dynamic person. Her final home in Maryland was, alas, short, but I know you got to spend some precious time with her and will cherish the wonderful memories you have of her. My thoughts are with you and your relatives, and I send you my love and sympathy. Charlie

Alex Haar

November 2, 2009

My name is Alex Haar (Virginia Beach, VA), son of Phyllis Creteau Haar (1941-2006), who was, in turn, the daughter of Margaret Marie Pettit (1913-1995; formerly Margaret Marie Creteau) and Charles Henry Creteau (1895-1954). My grandparents Creteau were wonderful, close friends of "Red" and Agnes in San Diego in the 1940's. In fact, my grandmother and her second husband (after the death of Charles) would remain friends with the Colemans in Norfolk for the next many decades. After my grandfather Creteau died, my grandmother moved my mother and herself back to Norfolk (circa 1954) to be closer to family and friends--especially her best friend, Agnes. I believe that my mother and my grandmother actually lived with Agnes for a short period in Norfolk around 1954-55 before they could secure a house of their own, although my memory on the subject is not what it should be. In 1960, my grandmother married James Leslie Pettit (1905-1996) who was also an active member in (among other things) Ocean View Fleet Reserve Branch 60. My grandmother continued to be involved with the Ladies Auxilliary with Agnes. Although I wasn't born until 1972, I do think I met the Colemans a few times in my youth. I do remember my grandfather Pettit talking fondly of "Red," and of course, my grandmother loved Agnes dearly. I'm sorry I won't be able to attend the services in MD. My sincere condolences to Agnes' family and to her beloved friends, far and wide.

May you find comfort in the thought that sorrow, grief and woe are sent into our lives sometimes to help our souls to grow. For through the depths of sorrow comes understanding love and peace and truth and comfort sent from God above.
