Mabel Copeland

Mabel P. Copeland NORFOLK - Mabel Perry Copeland, 91, of the 1200 block of Colonial Ave., passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, in Bon Secours De Paul Medical Center. Born in Powellsville, N.C., she was the daughter of the late John Perry and Marie Britton Perry. Mabel was an active girl who enjoyed being outdoors and playing basketball. She earned a 4-year degree from East Carolina Teachers' College. Mabel was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Samuel G. Copeland, and her cherished dog, Thomas. Sam and Mabel resided in the Larchmont neighborhood of Norfolk for more than 50 years. Mabel's deep love of children led her to work for Larchmont Methodist Church Kindergarten for more than 20 years, first as a teacher and later as director. She had a special affinity for animals, especially dogs and cats, and enjoyed gardening and identifying plants. Mabel's sweet disposition and playful sense of humor were a joy to all who knew her. Although she was generally modest, she prided herself on her natural red hair and freckles. Mabel is survived by two sons, Robert S. Copeland and John R. Copeland and his wife Beth; her daughters, Martha B. Armstrong and Christine N. Armstrong, all of Norfolk; a niece, Betsy Overton; cousin, Viola Perry of Powellsville, N.C.; and loyal friend, "Fuzzy." The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Robert Heide and his staff for their extraordinary care and compassion. A memorial service will be held at Larchmont Methodist Church Thursday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Scott Rimer and Pastor Sarah Wastella.
