Joseph Schreiber Obituary

Joseph A. Schreiber VIRGINIA BEACH - Joseph "Joe" Albert Schreiber, 83, formerly of Virginia Beach, passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009 in Richmond, Va. Born Sept. 21, 1926, in Detroit, to the late Joseph Frank Schreiber and Beatrice T. Schreiber, Joe retired from the United States Navy after 32 years of service. He is survived by two children, Dennis F. Schreiber and wife Kim of Richmond and Sharon Hathaway and husband Doug of Tucson, Ariz.; two stepchildren, William T. Altherr of Virginia Beach and Judith A. Turner and husband Jack of Harlingen, Texas; eight grandchildren, Angela Altherr, Laurie Martin, Vickie Paster, Dennis R. Schreiber, Roy Altherr, Brian M. Schreiber, Stephanie Eddy, and Sean Dryer; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; siblings, John Schreiber of Cynthiana, Ky., Thomas Schreiber (Father Larry, OFM) of San Antonio, Texas, Les Schreiber of Cupertino, Calif., Beatrice Reinersmann of Cincinnati, Ohio, Alvina Jean Hoffmann (stepsister) of Louisville, Ky., and MaryLou Carlson (stepsister) of West Covina, Calif. He was also predeceased by his wife, Frances Virginia Schreiber; a stepdaughter, Frances G. Altherr, stepbrother, Donald Steuber; and stepmother, Josephine T. Schreiber. Joe was best known as a very gentle and generous man who is always willing to help out no matter what he was asked to do. Joe was an avid baker - always making cookies, cakes, pastries and especially his famous banana nut bread for his family and friends. Joe enjoyed walking his Yorkies, Big Boy, Elle and Baxter. More than anything else, Joe loved to surround himself with family and friends and welcomed any opportunity that life had to offer. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.

Christine and I are sorry to hear about your loss. Joe was a great man. We are all blessed to have known him. He touched so many lives with his love of life and his great spirt. The world has lost a wonderful person. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your family.
