William Caviness Obituary

William Caviness Jr. EDENTON - William Branson "Bill" Caviness Jr., 80, of the 200 block of Country Club Drive, died Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, in Chowan Hospital. Mr. Caviness was born in Raleigh, N.C., and was the son of the late William B. Sr. and Louise Ayres Caviness. Retired from aircraft maintenance with United Airlines, he was a member of both the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers and the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association. He attended North Carolina State University and was always proud to be a "Wolf Packer" and a member of the Old Raleigh Boys Club. While living in Alexandria, Va., he enjoyed membership in the Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge and since moving to Edenton, was active in the Edenton Lions Club and the Edenton United Methodist Church where he served on both the building and witness committees. A veteran of the Korean War, he served with both the U.S. Navy and the Merchant Marines. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Branson Caviness and his brother, Lewis Lynn Caviness. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Anne Sykes Caviness; his daughter, Elizabeth Caviness Hathorn of Edenton; his son, Robert Lynn Caviness and wife Diann of Virginia Beach; two sisters-in-law, Jill Caviness of Atlanta and Martha Sykes Jones of Raleigh; and four grandchildren, Erick Corbett Hathorn of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Andrew William Hathorn and wife Anne of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Jessie Branson Caviness and Julie Lynn Caviness, both of Virginia Beach. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Edenton United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles Moseley. Inurnment will follow at 3 p.m. in Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh. Friends may join the family in the church social hall following the memorial service and all other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the building fund of Edenton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 37, Edenton, NC 27932. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.millerfhc.com.
