Norris Harris Obituary

Norris W. Harris Sr. NORFOLK - Norris Whitt Harris Sr. passed away at his home Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. He was 94 years of age. Norris was born in Chatham, Va., Jan. 10, 1915, and was the son of Alfred and Clara Harris. He was married for 51 years to Helen Long Harris who preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Anne Elizabeth Harris, her husband Mark Gregory Stengel; his son, Norris Whitt Harris Jr., his wife Kathryn and their daughter Alexandra, who is Norris' only grandchild. Not to be forgotten is Nuisance the dog, found at an animal shelter. Nuisance brought much joy, amusement and companionship to Norris. Norris spent his career as an electrical engineer for VEPCO, now known as Dominion Power. He was very proud of his work for VEPCO. He was fond of reminiscing about his days in the countryside as a young surveyor and the wonderful Packard automobiles he owned. He served in the 116th Infantry, Virginia National Guard from 1930 to 1940. During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater as a member of the 518th AAA Battalion. He remained in the Army Reserves retiring at the rank of lieutenant colonel. Norris and Helen traveled extensively after retirement, visiting more than 56 countries. Services will be in South Boston, Va., Thursday, Nov. 12. The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home, 115 Main St., at 1 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery at 2 p.m.

Norris “The Colonel” as I often called him while we worked at VEPCO in Norfolk. We worked together for about 6 years before I was transferred to another location, but we always stayed in touch through our annual Christmas Card. We both enclosed a note in the card to give each other an update on what we had been doing the past year.

I think the Colonel is with Helen having just finished his favored ham biscuit and about to have his evening martini.

I will miss him. Our prayers are with you,

Norris was a true friend and a mentor for me and a number of people who had the privileged of working for him. He touched my life in ways that he never knew. I am sorry that I was unable to attend his funeral. May God bless Norris who I know is now with Helen.
