Virginia Midkiff Obituary
Virginia Mae D. Midkiff NORFOLK - Virginia Mae DeBord Midkiff, 88, went home to be with the Lord Nov. 6, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie S. Midkiff Sr. and two brothers, Talm and Jim DeBord. She is survived by her three children, Leslie S. Midkiff Jr. (Pat) of Phoenix, Ariz., Charles F. Midkiff (Elaine) of Montpelier, Va., and Carolyn M. Strahl (Bruce) of Lutz, Fla.; eight grandchildren: Heather, Jennifer, Matthew, Alyssa, Ericka, Lance, Charles Jr. and Rebecca; one great-granddaughter, Landri; four sisters, Freda, Faye, Joyce and Sherry; and two brothers, Gene and Tink. Virginia was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was kind, gracious, lived a life of integrity, was an inspiration to many, and was loved by all who knew her. Virginia had a deep faith, loved the Lord, and prayed each day to the end of her life "Make my life count for you," and we know that it did. Her church family was important to her throughout her life, and she was a member of First Baptist Church of Norfolk. Virginia was proud of her part Native American heritage on her mother's side and her coal miner father. She graduated in 1942 from what is now West Virginia University at a time when few women did so. She taught business courses at Norfolk Christian High School and worked for the U.S. Postal Service, but considered her real career to be that of wife and mother, and caring for the needs of others. Her husband, Les, was a career Navy serviceman, and the family moved frequently. She tutored her children so they would not fall behind in school though constantly changing school systems and her efforts paid off as all three earned graduate degrees. A special thank you to all Mom's caregivers at Brighton Gardens in Tampa and to Hospice. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the 11 a.m. chapel service Saturday, Nov. 21, at Altmeyer Funeral Home of Virginia Beach, 5792 Greenwich Road. A graveside service will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her name to Bible Broadcasting Network, P.O. Box 7300, Charlotte, NC 28241. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.altmeyer. com.
