Lawrence Shaffer Obituary

Lawrence H. Shaffer VIRGINIA BEACH - Lawrence Harry Shaffer passed away in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital Nov. 11, 2009. His passing was the result of medical complications resulting from a stroke, but comfort can be taken that he is now reunited with his wife, Christine, who passed away in 2002. Born April 3, 1935, in Harrisburg, Pa., he grew up in Sandy Lake, Pa., where he joined the National Guard, and eventually the United States Navy where he served until his retirement in 1986. He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Shaffer in 2002, and leaves to mourn him his son, Larry Robert Shaffer of Virginia Beach. In addition, he leaves his brothers, Richard Shaffer of Clearfield, Pa., and David Shaffer of Mesa, Ariz., and their families. His smile, wit, and readily helping hand were known to many. Very active even after retirement, he was heavily involved in VFW Post 392, as well as the Military Order of the Cooties Pup Tent No. 9. He was also a member of both the American and Canadian Legions. A memorial service is planned Nov. 21 at the VFW Post No. 392 on Bowland Parkway. Cremation Society of Virginia is assisting the family.
