Jay I. Brooks Jr. PORTSMOUTH - Jay Ira Brooks Jr. passed peacefully Nov. 30, 2009. Simply put, Jay Brooks was a good man. He was a devoted husband, dedicated father, doting Pop Pop, active citizen, and loyal brother, nephew, cousin and friend. The one constant that spanned Jay's entire life was love and appreciation of family. Beginning with a happy childhood surrounded by a loving family and extended family in Tennessee, ultimately, Jay became patriarch of his own brood with seven children and 10 grandchildren. Jay retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He served proudly in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a service officer for the VFW, and an active member of the American Legion and National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). He was predeceased by his youngest son, Paul, and son-in-law, Craig Myles. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Helen "Lynn"; his brother, Richard and wife Norma of El Paso, Texas; four sons, Jay III and wife Teri, Bobby and wife Glenda, Johnny and Richie; two daughters, Sherry Myles and Allison Hamraz and husband Kouros; a daughter-in- law, June; 10 grandchildren, Rachael, Justin, Brandon, Layla, Ross, Jordan, Lisa, Katie-Clare, Jay IV and Richard Jr.; a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends. Jay lived a fulfilled life - his treasure was family and friends and he will remain always in our hearts. Dad always said that having family around was heaven on earth. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.

To the Brooks family,

I am sorry to hear about Uncle Jay. My family has been away from the Portsmouth area for almost 40 yrs. but as a child I remember going to the house with My Mema (Your Aunt Etta) and visiting. Playing in the yard with the kids and setting around the table in the kitchen and eating someting that Aunt Lynn had made. My father (Charles)and our whole family send our loving thoughts and prayers to you.

Ritchie and to the Brooks family. I am sorry to hear of Mr. Brooks passing. He is your Angel now and may God Bless you and your family. My brothers grew up with the Brooks' and have many memories of them during Christmas, you remember my brother best as "Santa"and his elf "Ritchie".

To Mrs. Brooks and the family,

I am sorry to hear of Mr. Brooks passing..I too grew up on Kingman Ave, just two doors down. I to remember Mr. Brooks in a loud voice disciplining the kids and how that used to scare me into doing the right thing. I guess it was because at the time..I was so small and Mr. Brooks was a big man. I remember into my adult life having a long wonderful conversation with him at Allison's wedding..and then I realized he was not a big man at all..but a kind and gentle person. Thank you Mr. Brooks for being that strong,tough, authoritative figure for all of us kids growing up on Kingman Ave..we all turned out fine. Your work is done here on this Earth.

Helen ,my name is Bettie Jo Matthews/Morris I used to give you a ride to college years ago. I am a member of VFW and knew your husband to be a very nice friendly and helpful man. I'am very sorry for your family and you to hear about the death of Jay. I lost my husband and a daughter ,so I know the pain you must feel . I know all who knew him will be sadden to hear about his death. I will keep you and yours in my thoughts and prayers.

To Mrs. Brooks and the whole family,

I was sorry to hear of Mr. Brooks passing. I have many vivid memories from my childhood on Kingman Avenue with him in them, the most vivid being that morning sneeze he would do almost routinely on the front porch. The sound of it seemed to echo throughout the entire neighborhood, and it always made me laugh even if it was unintentional.

He always seemed to me a big man in stature and character, and you knew when he was around. God bless your entire family in this time.
