Margaret Umphlett Obituary

Margaret M. Umphlett SUFFOLK - Margaret Mann Umphlett, 82, passed away Dec. 1, 2009. A native of Nansemond County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late G.C. Mann and Maggie Abernathy Mann. She was also predeceased by her husband, Clyde Jefferson Umphlett; her sister, Becky; and two brothers, Charles and Bill. She was an educator and counselor in Chapel Hill, N.C., and Clemson, S.C., and later a counselor at an abused women's center. As a child of educators and being an educator herself, she had an ongoing quest for knowledge. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Jeff of Elberton, Ga., and Rebel and Myrna of Durham, N.C.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Betty M. Bunch of Suffolk; and brother, Philip R. Mann of Burlington, N.C. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. at Cypress Chapel Christian Church, with the Rev. Willis I. Dowling officiating. Friends may join the family for visitation at the church after the funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the American Cancer Society, Suffolk Chapter, 604 Constance Woods Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434 or a charity of your choice.
