Mr. Sykes was my principal when I attended Hodges Manor Elementary School back in the 60's. So sorry for your loss.

Dear Mrs. Sykes, Jeff, Martha and all of the Sykes family,

I just heard on the WVEC news yesterday, December 13 that there was a boating/fishing accident and when they said Jefferson Sykes I remembered that Vick's first name was Jefferson. I called Green Acres Presbyterian to check and see if it indeed was the Dr. Sykes I knew. I am terribly sorry to hear of the accident and passing away of Dr. Sykes. In my years singing at Green Acres Presbyterian Church you all were such friendly and wonderful people. I thought highly of Dr. Sykes as did also my mother Betty who taught in the Portsmouth schools in the 50's and 60's. May God richly bless you all with His grace and peace as only He can give.

In Christ,
Denny Hollowell

Jeff, Mrs. Sykes, Martha, & family -- I was shocked and so sorry to hear about Mr. Sykes. What a fine and kind man he was, and so fun too! Every time I was around him he was upbeat, and always showed interest in people and whatever they (we) were talking about. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

God bless --

Vick always had a smile on his face and a warm welcome whenever you saw him. I saw him last when Arden and I were home for Thanksgiving and he was so happy to the how much the boy had grown. Vick was always a welcome sight every Sunday at church. He was a boon to the community and I know he will be greatly missed by every life he touched. My love and sincerest condolences to the family.

Mr. Sykes was my very first principal when I began my teaching career in 1976. I taught sixth grade at Harry Hunt Junior High School. He was the standard to which I held all other administrators in my thirty-one years of teaching. Please accept my sincerest sympathy.

Our deepest condolences on the passing of your loved one. Vick being an older cousin and living in Virginia, I only got to see him on a few occasions, but I did think about him often. I have a picture of Vick in his sailor suit standing with his mom.
Our prayers are with Pat and the family.
With our love,
Eugene Morgan and family.
