Doris Umphlett

Doris H. Umphlett GATES - Doris Howell Umphlett, 75, of Hackley Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Mrs. Umphlett was born in Gates County and was the daughter of the late John Robert and Helen Piland Howell. The valedictorian of the Gatesville High School Class of 1952, she retired as an administrative assistant with the Gates County Department of Social Services, and was a faithful member of Eure Christian Church and its Women's Fellowship. Surviving are her husband of 57 years, H. Lilton Umphlett Jr.; two sons, Donnie Umphlett and wife Barbara of Corapeake and Kenny Umphlett and wife Kelly of Gates; two brothers, Robert Taylor Howell and Lowell Howell, both of Eure; and four grandchildren, Andrew Lewis Umphlett of Silva, N.C., Josh Umphlett and Kimberly Lynne Umphlett, both of Greenville, N.C., and Stephen Anthony Umphlett of Gates. A funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Eure Christian Church by the Revs. Wayne Gardner and Michael Brinkley. Burial will follow in the Umphlett Family Cemetery near the home. Friends may join the family today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, and other times at the residence.
