William Hemingway Obituary

William Hemingway Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - William Rowe Hemingway Jr., 76, died Dec. 14, 2009, in Virginia Beach. Bill was born Aug. 13, 1933, in Norfolk; he was the son of the late William Rowe Hemingway and Marion Haskins Grimes. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie Seelinger Foster Hemingway, and his two children from a previous marriage to the late Jane Alexander Hemingway, a son, William Rowe Hemingway III and his wife Laura Winfield Hemingway of Miami, Fla., and a daughter, Mildred Alexander Hemingway Byrd and her husband William Howard Byrd of Virginia Beach; the grandchildren are Raleigh and Waverly Byrd and Lauren, Diane, William and Robert Hemingway. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Peyton Wilder and several nieces and nephews. A 1951 graduate of Maury High School and a member of the wrestling team, he was a student at the University of Virginia where he joined the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and later became its president. After serving in the U.S. Army for a time, he returned to UVA to complete his education, receiving his Bachelor of Science in commerce. After receiving his CPA, he was employed by Tidewater Construction Company, later to become its chief financial officer and senior vice president. An active member of the community of Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Bill served as past president of the Virginia Beach Toastmasters and president of the Virginia Beach Sports Club, and president of the Norfolk Sertoma Club. He was a member of the Princess Anne Country Club. Bill was a member of Galilee Episcopal Church and served as a member of the vestry, lay reader, treasurer and junior warden. The family would like to thank Mary Diggs, Sheila Parham and Brenda James for their dedicated and loving care. They are truly angels of mercy. A funeral will be conducted at Galilee Episcopal Church, 40th Street and Pacific Avenue, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Andrew Buchanan on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery, 2020 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society or Saint Mary's Home for Disabled Children, 6171 Kempsville Circle, Norfolk, VA 23502.
