William Parker Obituary

William M. Parker Jr. DUMFRIES - On Dec. 16, 2009, retired U.S. Coast Guard Cmdr. William Melvin Parker Jr., 57, passed away with a full heart and open arms, surrounded by his family. He retired after 22 years of service in the Coast Guard. His military career included a tour as the commanding officer aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Campbell, New Bedford, Mass. Mr. Parker also retired from Ciber Inc. where he was a program manager and developed a maritime security practice. Bill was born Nov. 23, 1952 in Norfolk, son of the late William Melvin Parker Sr. and the late Marjorie Baum Parker. He loved the outdoors and felt closest to God when he was by the water, especially on his surf board. He was an accomplished trumpet player and a loving and devoted husband and father. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Lt. Nicholas W. Parker and his girlfriend Erin Kordis of Westerly, R.I.; two daughters and their husbands, Lt. Brittany C. Parker Poley and Lt.j.g. Bill and Melinda drove me and my very young son to a Girl Scout skiing trip. I have always appreciated the kindness they showed me then. I am very sorry to hear and read about his death. My condolences to the family.

Bill was one of the best managers we had at DRI. I remember him best from the day we spent fishing together in the Gulfstream off the Florida Keys. Bill was certainly a fine seaman and loved being on the water.

My deepest sympathy to Melinda and the rest of Bill's family.

"Perch" was a great friend from the Academy days. I first met him at a meeting for prospective wrestlers and I remember him as a 'gung ho wrestler' for arranging practice sessions before the regular season started. Being of similar weight, we frequently sparred together. He was always tough.
Our Deepest Sympathy to Melinda and family.

"Perch" - as we called him at the Coast Guard Academy and have since 1971 when we arrived - was a Classmate and great friend. I remember him in our Cadet days as a great wrestler, trumpeter and lover of the outdoors, especially the sea. He later became the man that we have had the honor and privelege of knowing - a wonderful husband and father, and an exceptional Coast Guard officer.

More than anyone I have known, Bill loved life and lived everyday like it was his last, especially in these last two years. Bill was blessed in many ways - with a wonderful wife and kids he loved so much and was so proud of.

I'm thankful Bill is no longer suffering, but his loss leaves a void that all of us in the Class of 1975 will feel for a long time. Goodbye, Shipmate.

Bill is a man of great faith who taught me how to appreciate the gift of life and enjoy each little event of every day. It was great to see the growth in his faith thru retreats, his and Mindy's, his preaching on life in the midst of his illness and his limitless hope and sense of humor. BAM writings and occasional phone conversations were among the great highlights of my life over the last year. As long as one is remembered one lives; such is the case with Bill.

Perch was one of my early friends at school as our Dads were good friends from work and told us to look each other up. He was a wonderful person and I very much enjoyed watching him kick butt on the wrestling mats. I still have the scratches on the windshield of my "Academy Muscle Car" where he tried to defrost the inside with his snow goggles..... did not work and I think of him every time I crank it up. He will be missed. My deepest condolences to Mindy and the family.

Bill filled his life to the brim! I will miss him. I knew Bill from junior high and high school in Great Bridge and have enjoyed blogging with him for the past year or so as he fought his courageous fight. For his loved ones, I pray for peace and serenity.

"Perch" stood out in a community of over-achievers whether it was on a wrestling mat or aboard a cutter. A class act, a dependable shipmate and a man who enriched every life he touched - and there were many. He will be sorely missed.

A true gentleman with a wonderful sense of humour. I'll never forget our running joke at Disney about the TV or when at a particular dance recital, we had my son let us know when our daughters or wives dance was coming up while we "rested our eyes." He just was one of those people you say "now that's a good guy." Bill Parker is someone if you eber met you would never forget and I won't.

Dear Parker Family,

I was so very sorry to hear about Bill’s passing. I went to school with Dorothy and Bill and was in band with them. What a very sweet family.
Both Bill and Dorothy are in many of my fond memories from school-good friends, good laughs, good times. I know many people will miss Bill here, but know he is just starting his wonderful life in eternity next to Jesus. No words can take the pain away from a loved one, but please know so many others cared very much about Bill and share in your sorrow.

Sincerely,
Cindy (Parks) Hudson

Such a handsome man. We have lost a true gentleman with a heart of gold and a sense of humor unmatched. The journey ahead will be almost as difficult as the one finished. Please let those who love you be there and know there is not a right or proper way to grieve. You have my love and prayers in the many days to come.
