Carolyn Brady Obituary

Carolyn W. Brady MOREHEAD CITY - Carolyn Westbrook Brady, 78, of Morehead City, N.C. formerly of Raleigh, N.C., died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at Carteret General Hospital surrounded by her family. Carolyn was born Oct. 8, 1931, in Dunn, N.C., the daughter of Earl McDonald Westbrook and Mary Eliza Jones Westbrook. She attended Dunn High School and graduated high school from Saint Mary's Junior College in Raleigh. She graduated from Duke University where she a member of the Alpha Delta Phi sorority. Most of her life was spent rearing her children and caring for others. She also loved her time at Saint Mary's as an assistant to the registrar and watching Duke basketball. Carolyn began going to Atlantic Beach as a young child with her grandmother, parents, sisters, and many cousins with whom she remained especially close all of her life. She instilled her love of the beach in all her children and many happy years were spent at their family summer home After her marriage to Mike Brady in 1983, Carolyn moved permanently to Carteret County. They particularly enjoyed traveling, sailing, birdwatching, and spending time at their Pelletier Creek home. She was an active member of Saint Andrews Episcopal Church and was also a member of the Surfside Garden Club. Her life was fulfilled when she cooked and cared for her many friends and family. She was particularly proud of her seven children and 11 grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Colin Campbell Brown II and wife Rebecca of Raleigh, Sandra Brown Wayt of Annapolis, Md., Bruce MacDonald Brown Jr. of Nags Head, N.C., Carol Brown Nash and husband Patrick of Washington, N.C., Kim Brady Maness and husband Bruce of Raleigh, Michael Reid Brady and wife Darlene of Bentonville, N.C., Walter Douglas Brady and wife Carolyn of Beaufort; and 11 grandchildren, Campbell Brown, Issac Brown, Layton Brown, Sarah Staton Nash, Crutcher Nash, Katie Nash, Erin Maness, Carson Maness McGilloway, Brady Maness, Douglass Brady, and Ruthie Brady. She is also survived by her loving sister, Jane Westbrook Thomason of Fayetteville, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Walter Morris Brady; her parents; and sister, Mary Ann Barbour. The family wishes to thank her loving companions and caregivers at home and Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay especially Wendy Cahoon, Amber Davis, Jodi Hamilton, Jane Rose, and April Taylor. Also, the caring and compassionate staff of Carteret General Hospital PCU for their kindness during her illness. A memorial service will be held at Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church in Morehead City on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 1 p.m. The family will greet friends following the service in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 2005 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC 28557 or Saint Mary's School, 900 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC 27603.

Hi, everyone, our love to you all. As a friend of Kim and Bruce's, I remember how kind Carolyn was to allow us to park and access the beach from y'all's Ocean Ridge posh address. What a lovely lady, so kind and generous. I know she will be sorely missed and fondly remembered this Christmas and always. Tom and Lisa Williamson
