Carolyn, I am so sorry to hear about Joe's passing. Even though I haven't seen Joe since I moved away from Norfolk in 1989, I have thought about him often and the role he played in my career. He was a mentor to me and so many people who passed through Channel 3. In your sadness take heart, the world is a better place because of Joe.

Please accept my sincere simpathy at Joe's passing. When I was a little kid (6-7 years old) and my dad –Winston Hope - was the first production manager of WTAR TV (actually NBC for the first few years before the switch to CBS) Joe gave me my very first airplane ride in his old skin-covered Piper Cub tail-dragger with tandem seats and a stick rather than a wheel and no radio transmitter – just a receiver – so he had to waggle the wings to acknowledge the tower operator. This was shortly after Arthur Godfrey dedicated the BRAND NEW Norfolk Municipal Airport (He flew in from Teterboro in his old DC3). Later Joe he gave me my first helicopter ride at Nags head in an old Bell, MASH –style bubble top.

Carolyn,
Betty and I are extremely saddened to learn of Joe's passing. When I began work at Channel 3 in early 1966, Joe was anchoring the weeknight 11 pm news. He immediately became a friend. I would see him a lot during the first two years at the station before I was re-assigned to work, and be based on the Peninsula. Joe loved to tell stories. The ones I remember the most were of the days when the commercials had to be done live before the advent of videotape! He always had a smile, such a pleasant personality.
I feel that both the Virginian-Pilot and the Daily Press ought to do stories on him as a legendary and pioneer broadcaster in Hampton Roads. There are a lot of "old timers" who used to watch Joe every night when there were only a few viewing choices and in the era when there were not many TV remove controls and viewers didn't keep changing the channel! That was what is called "appointment viewing" and thousands of people had an appointment with Joe and the WTAR-TV 11 pm news. We are so glad he was able to finally get the heart transplant and enjoy so many additional years of life.

Carolyn- Andrea and I are very sorry for your loss and profoundly saddened to hear of Joe's passing. Although we haven't had the pleasure of knowing Joe a very long time, I was honored to be his friend and truly enjoyed our talks in front of the house.
Perk is a Great American and we are blessed having known him.
If you need help of any kind during this stressful period please let us know. We are standing-by and just across the street.

Carolyn, Although I was sad to read the news of Joe's passing...I felt more privledged to have known & be touched by the spirit of the man. Whenever I'd think of "Perk" I'd always smile & laugh at the stories he told me over the years. I'm happy to report that I'm still smiling. I can't imagine what you & your family may be feeling at this time, but I'm sure that when you think of Joe, it doesn't take long for the smiles to return to your faces too. Your family is so blessed to have had someone like Joe for so long...and Joe was blessed to have you too. I know how much his family made Joe "Perk". Gotta love that!

During my tenure as Keyman for the Quiet Birdmen, I enjoyed the fellowship and comradeship with Joe. He was a warm and caring man and I will miss him. Rest in peace my friend.
