Robert Futterman Obituary

Robert L. Futterman NORFOLK - Robert Lawrence Futterman, 56, a Realtor in both Norfolk, and Atlanta, died April 14, 2010 in his home outside Atlanta surrounded by his family. He died after a long and brave struggle with esophageal cancer. Rob began a broadcasting career immediately after graduating high school in 1972 first as a disk jockey with WNOR-AM and then as part of the pioneering team that ushered in the modern FM era on FM-99, WNOR. He also announced for WLPM in Suffolk. Rob worked as an award-winning engineer and producer with Studio Center in Norfolk. He then earned a degree from the Institute Of Audio Engineering in Los Angeles. And, for two years, continued engineering with several major recording acts. Rob transitioned to a successful career as a multi award winning real estate broker for more than 25 years with Coldwell Banker, RE/MAX and, most recently, Keller Williams in both Norfolk and Atlanta. Rob also enjoyed training, mentoring and teaching in many areas, including real estate sales and computer usage. He volunteered extensively over the last few years at Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia. Rob's great passion for music and his ability to get you to "just take a listen" was well known and expanded the music libraries of many friends and family members over the decades. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Bonnie and his two children, Justin and Evan, both of Johns Creek, Ga. He is also survived by his mother and father, Ralph and Mindy Futterman of Beth Sholom Village of Virginia Beach; brother, Craig of Bethesda, Md., (Judy Futterman); his sister, Marcia Brodie (Steve Brodie) of Norfolk; and his brother, Eric of Glen Allen, Va. Rob also leaves behind several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held today, April 16, at 2 p.m. at Temple Israel, 7255 Granby St., in Norfolk with Rabbi Michael Panitz officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. A memorial service for Rob will be held in Johns Creek, Ga., April 20 at 3 p.m. The service will be held at the Medlock Bridge Old Clubhouse, 10150 Grooms Bridge Road. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society by calling either (757) 493-7940 or (770) 814-0123. Arrangements by Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach Chapel. I don´t know what think me think of Rob today after all these years. Rob sold us our 1st and only house, 26 yrs ago, this April. Boy,, did I put him through the wringer looking at places. He was always sweet and had a genuine soul. He did his best to get us a great deal on our house. Patience was his virtue. He spoke highly of his wife and I hope she knows he´s still thought about after all these years! Here´s to you Rob!

I am a friend of Rob. I heard the news from a close friend of his Gary and was in shock. Rob assisted me with my sale of my home in Chesapeake last year and drove me and my wife Debbie all over the Tidewater area in search of another...he was always ready to assist and was as always fun to have around. We met sometime in the mid 70,s when he was active in radio, etc. I will miss his wit and humor and willingness to help anyone -anytime.Our prayers to go out to his family.

Dear Bonnie
I am so sorry about Rob. He was a wonderfull person. We were friends for 37 years. He will be missed by all that knew him. I wish I could have made the service but my medical problems kept me from making it.

It's hard to believe that so many years have passed since we worked together at WLPM Radio in Suffolk, Virginia. Rob was a good guy and I always enjoyed hearing from him from time to time over the years. I offer my deepest sympathy to his family. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

It was with tremendous sadness that I read the heartbreaking news of your loss. Rob was a lovely man, who was devoted to his family. My parents and his were lifelong friends, and I saw him almost every day at Beth Shalom, where my mom and his folks were neighbors. He was dedicated to his parents, and clearly, to his entire family. To the whole Futterman family, who has endured much, I extend my deepest sympathy, and my love.
