Jennie Mendelsohn Obituary

Jennie G. Mendelsohn VIRGINIA BEACH - Sadly, the world lost one of its kindest people, Jennie Mendelsohn, on April 15, 2010. Born May 9, 1921 in Norfolk, to Mary and Louis Greenburg, she married her Maury High School sweetheart, Nathan "Nishie" Mendelsohn on Dec. 10, 1939. She was a nurturing, supportive wife for 59 years and she loved her Nishie! She raised three children Helene Schacter, Howard Mendelsohn and Jeffrey Louis Mendelsohn and later adored her son-in-law, Bob and daughters-in-law, Linda, Margaret and Edna as if they were her own. Family was Jennie's greatest joy and her eight grandchildren - Warren (wife Vanessa), John (wife Booil) and Ben Schacter, Jodilyn (husband Tracy Bush), Andi (husband Eddie Baldree), Jami Mendelsohn, Mariann (husband Will Brush) and Michael Mendelsohn - and later to follow, eight great-grandchildren, Elijah Schacter, Benjamin Schacter, Nathan, Cameron and Brendan Baldree, Brett and Trevor Bush and Mary-Margaret Brush were constant fodder for doting, bragging, affection and unconditional love. The youngest of three siblings, Jennie treasured her close-knit relationships with her sister, Freyda Keller Zimmerman and brother, Abe Greenburg, chatting daily and supporting one another. After retiring in Florida for close to 30 years, Jennie returned to Norfolk in 2008 and enjoyed her reconnection with her childhood friends. She was a lifelong lover of fashion and an enthusiastic mah-jong player. This family has lost its matriarch, an irreplaceable pillar of strength, kindness, love, selflessness, with an easy laugh. In her high school annual, she is quoted as loving "Red Roses, Chocolate Ice cream and Dancing" and that was how Jennie lived... she loved the beauty, sweetness and happiness of life. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 18, at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Please share your love and condolences with the family at www.smithandwilliamsnorfolk.com.
