Richard Baker Obituary

Richard Lee Baker CHESAPEAKE - Richard Lee Baker, 79, passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2010, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Richard was born in Kent County, Michigan Feb. 26, 1931, the son of the late James Richard and Doris Cornell Baker. He was an active trustee for Haygood United Methodist Church where he had been a member for numerous years. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 23 years of service having served aboard submarines. He was an active member in the SUBVETS World War II where he held many posts. He was an avid golfer, he enjoyed crossword puzzles which he completed in pen, and loved going to the gym a couple days a week. Dick looked forward to special lunch meetings with Jess, the smartest friend he knew. He was predeceased by his first wife and the mother of his children, Lois Jean Baker and his second wife, Gloria Brinkley Kalenowsky. He is survived by his three daughters, LeAnn S. Baker and husband Howie Crist, Deborah Frederick and husband Shawn, and Jana M. Nance and husband Roger and his son, James R. Baker. Richard is also survived by his four grandchildren, Kelli Marie Evans, Tara M. Jarzombek, Birch W. Nance and Richard Lee Nance and his one great-grandson, Jaden Lee. He also leaves his faithful canine companion, Buddy, and numerous extended family and friends. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date in Haygood United Methodist Church, 4713 Haygood Road, Virginia Beach. The Rev. Chuck Shumate will officiate. Date and time will be published. Memorial donations may be made in Richard's name to Haygood United Methodist Church or SUBVETS. Arrangements are being handled through the Cremation & Burial Society of Hampton Roads.

Richard, In this time of sorrow, I think back some 30 years ago when you and I first meet, Both retired Navy and both working for Public Storage, what a great time those years were and to have you as a friend that we could call on for assistance and most of all your knowledgeable advice,You were the best. There will always be a warm spot in our heart for you. As one shipmate to another I wish you fair winds and calm seas in your future travels.
