Richard David Amme VIRGINIA BEACH - Retired Navy Capt. Richard David Amme of Atlantic Shores made his transition April 13, 2010 at the age of 84. He was born Aug. 25, 1925 in Charleston, S.C., a son of Carl Henry Amme and Josie Bargmann Amme. He attended Charleston High School, and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 with the Class of 1947. He earned his Naval Aviation wings in 1950. Dick served in several squadrons and commanded Patrol Squadron Twenty-Four. His later duties included executive officer of the Helicopter Carrier USS Guam (LPH-9); Branch Head and Planner for Arms Control, Politico-Military Affairs Division of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, where he earned Navy Meritorious Service Medal, and the NATO staff of the Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic. His last duty station was at Charleston, S.C., where he served as manager of the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) program in the Sixth Naval District. Upon retirement in 1975, Capt. Amme served as the Naval Science instructor of the NJROTC Unit at Brunswick High School, Brunswick, Ga., for 10 years. Dick's passions included tennis, bridge, classical and jazz music, boating, traveling, and his many, many canine pals. He and his wife, Marge, moved to Atlantic Shores Retirement Community in Virginia Beach in October 2000. The last 10 years were spent enjoying special friends from this community and wonderful times with his twin daughters, Debra and Diane, and their family members, Chuck Hartman and Ann DeMichael, granddaughters, Brooke and Kristen, and Kristen's family, Ron and Ava. Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Marge; son, Rick; and brothers, Bon and Bobby. A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 25, at 3:30 p.m. in the Magnolia Room at Atlantic Shores Retirement Community. The family would like to thank Tiffany Anderson for her devoted care as well as the staff at Atlantic Shores for all their love they bestowed upon our father. Cremation Society of Virginia is assisting the family.
