To The Family of Delores Howard Pritchard,

Please accept my sincere condolences. I want to share with you my long time impression of Dolores who I knew as a musician and professional singer. She was a graceful performer who was blessed with a beautiful voice She was also a warm and caring person . She was indeed an exceptional model for aspiring singers. A number of years ago, I was blessed with the opportunity to observe her as a performer as well as perform with her. She was a person and performer who exuded great dignity, professionalism and exceptional vocal talent. I will not forget her. God Bless you all,

Dr. Shelia Jackson Maye

Delores "Howard" Pritchard was one of the most amazing contraltos and beloved classical pianists in Tidewater, Virginia. She was as well one of the most dignified women in town. Her voice was as angelic as the Greek Muses; she played piano with grace equaled to the Goddess of Mirth and Terpsichore. Indeed she was a trailblazer. Many African-American musicians in Virginia were sternly taught, and trained, by her. Throughout the 1970s and through the 1990s, Delores Pritchard was the piano instructor of choice for countless children of middle-class black families in Hampton Roads. Before its closing, Mrs. Pritchard had been music professor at Charlotte Hawkins Brown’s famed Palmer Memorial Institute in Sedalia, N.C. In her latter years, she used her talent as an organist to fill many of Norfolk’s black churches with Sunday song. A larger than life character, she would light up every room she entered with her lively presence, which befitted an opera singer, and with her melodious speaking (and singing) voice, which was akin to a grande dame. Oftentimes she wore a matching skirt and cape combination outfit, a look that became her signature, especially in the late 1970s. For many of us, if Norfolk, Virginia was a beautiful song, it would sound like Mrs. Pritchard’s lovely soul.

Our hearts pour out to her son Timothy, to The Howard Sisters, to her brother, and to her extended family. She was one of our late Aunt Rowena McFadden’s two best friends. May you all find comfort in knowing that throughout her lifetime, she has touched so many lives...

To the Howard & Pritchard: Mrs. Pritchard was my Junior High School Voice & music teacher. She was a jewel and I learned lots from her. Heaven now has a melodious voice to add the the choir. May you each be blessed.

The King of Love My Shephard Is. I began singing with Dolores in the Chancel Choir when I was 17. This is one of the songs she led. When I went out into the world, whenever I felt afraid or sad, I would sing that verse and I could hear Dolores' rich contralto voice in my head. It kept me grounded. Her gift will live on!
