Steven Sykes Obituary

Steven H. Sykes NORFOLK - Steven H. Sykes, 72, of the 5600 block of Tidewater Drive, passed away June 7, 2010. Steve proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard, before accepting a position with the U.S. government as a sheet metal mechanic, from which he eventually retired. He was a history buff with main interests in the American Revolutionary War, in which he participated in many reenactments over the years. He welcomed into his home any child in the need of love and TLC. He was often seen during the holiday season ringing the bells for the Salvation Army and caught many times with a twinkle in his eye as The Jolly Old Elf himself. He was a wonderful husband, loving father and powerful influence to many. He was loved by all that knew him. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Gloria; his five children, Chris (Sharlene) Sykes, Jennifer (Johnny) Miller, Deborah Carignan, Bob (Doris) Rice, and Brandon (Danielle) Curry; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dolores Fleischer and Patricia Fountain. There will be a memorial service today, June 11, at 3 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Southside Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army Angel Tree Fund. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.altmeyer.com.
