Herbert Crudup Obituary

Herbert Crudup CHESAPEAKE - Herbert Crudup, 98, affectionately known as Bill, of the 800 block of Park Row, passed away peacefully into eternal rest July 13, 2010, at his home. Herbert was the son of the late Viola Jarvis Crudup Clemons and Solomon Crudup of the Oak Grove section of Chesapeake. He was predeceased by his brothers, Harry, Everett, Lymas Jr., and Louis, and his sister, Willie Mae. Herbert was also predeceased by his daughter, Susan Crudup. Herbert was educated in the public schools of Great Bridge and accepted Christ as his Savior at Little Zion Baptist Church, Chesapeake. He was employed with Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a painter and retired after more than 35 years of service. On Oct. 23, 1937 Herbert married Vannie Henrietta McCoy. They were married for 60 years until her untimely death in 1997. The loving couple made their home in the South Hill section of South Norfolk (Chesapeake). To this union were born 10 children - six girls and four boys. The family attended New Mount Olive AME Church, Chesapeake. Herbert is survived by nine children, Herbert Marshall Crudup (Ursula), Connie C. Whitfield, Phyllis Crudup Bryant, Karl Allan Crudup Sr. (Beverly), Rita C. Armstrong (Howard), Charlotte B. Crudup, Janet Crudup Lovick, Andrew B. Crudup (Theresa), and Van Richard Crudup. He is also survived by his only uncle, Simon Eugene Jarvis of Baltimore; 22 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends. A celebration of life will be held at noon Monday at New Mount Olive AME Church, 1953 Campostella Road, Chesapeake with the Rev. Ira K. McMillan Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley Ave. Chapel. Viewing will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with interment in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Crudup Family Endowed Scholarship Fund, Norfolk State University Foundation, 700 Park Ave., Norfolk, VA 23504.
