Betty Unger Obituary

Betty W. Unger VIRGINIA BEACH - Betty W. Unger of Virginia Beach, Auburndale, Fla., and Topsfield, Mass., peacefully passed away Aug. 8, 2010, at Beth Sholom Village in Virginia Beach. She was born in Lafayette, Ind., the youngest daughter of Theophile Emil Woelffle and Jennie Brachman Woelffle of Indiana. She graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. degree in home economics in 1941 and married the love of her life, Richard Arlington Unger (also a Purdue graduate) in 1942. She worked as a chemist for the Army during World War II. They were married 59 years prior to Richard's death April 18, 2001. She was an exceptional wife and mother dedicating her life's energy to her family and friends. Betty gracefully and steadfastly overcame the destruction and limitations of rheumatoid arthritis having developed the disease in her early 20s. All who knew her enjoyed and applauded her strength of constitution and richness of personality. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Nancy Unger Lekberg of Virginia Beach and Barbara Unger Tomlinson and husband Michael Tomlinson of Flagstaff, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Eric Arlington Lekberg and partner Benjamin Lekberg of Indianapolis, Ind., and Kirstin Lekberg-McLaughlin of Rio Rancho, N.M.; two great-grandchildren, Adison Lee Lekberg- McLaughlin and Logan Michael Lekberg of Rio Rancho, N.M. The family will gather at a later date to celebrate her life. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangments and online condolences may be made to the family at hdoliver.com.
