My deepest sympathies to the Goodman family. Mr. Goodman created a great store because he considered family first. I know he made each one of his customers feel like a member of the family and that's why my mother was a customer for over 40 years, passing on the legacy to her daughters.

Mr. Goodman was a great teacher, father, husband, and visionary. He developed a unique paternalistic approach to everything - I came to call it "a skeptical embrace" (his natural instincts were to believe in people, but experience taught him to "verify"). The creator of the very definition of the phrase "Family Business" - the "family" was all encompassing and wildly extended. Nearly all of us with contact felt like part of the family (an exceptionally rare thing among members of the vendor community - but the Goodmans, lead by their patient patriarch (SG) included even the swarming jackles and predatory reps into their fold [it was so dis-arming - he always got the best deals-ohhh;-). I'll forever be grateful to have known Mr. G, and to have had the benefit of his wisdom, and guidance. He taught me much about my profession, and I'm proud to have known him.

To the Family of Stanley Goodman:
I was shocked to learn that Mr. Goodman died. My father-in-law, James Franklin Childers, has been at the same rehab facility the past few weeks. When I went to visit Mr. Childers each day, I would say “hello” to Mr. Goodman if his door was open. He was usually sitting up and seemed comfortable and alert. He appeared ready to go home, which he told me he was looking forward to. My father-in-law was doing the best he had in four months of fighting pneumonia and its complications. His doctor removed his trache. Then he had to return to Riverside. I must imagine the same happened to Mr. Goodman. At 1am my father-in-law was resting comfortably and all his vital signs were excellent. At 3am on September 1st he was dead. They were the same age. They were both good men, loved and respected by many. Our family is devastated and I know yours is too. We wish you well.
Sincerely,
September 13, 2010

To all the Goodman family,
My sympathy goes out to each and everyone of you at this sad time. I will always remember whenever I went to the store and your parents were both there, the sense of calm and love they showed to one another was inspirational to me personally. Your father will be missed but the memories he gave to me without even realizing it, will stay with me for the rest of my life. His sense of pride in his family was evident. I know this is a difficult time for all of you, but especially for your dear mother. Please know Mark and I will keep your father and your family in our thoughts and hope comfort will come to you in the coming days and weeks that your father touched the lives of all who met him.
